Finding the Glimmers: The Heart of NeuroSpark
At NeuroSpark Counseling, our name and approach are inspired by the powerful concept of "glimmers" – those small moments that spark joy, connection, and safety in our nervous systems. While many of us are familiar with triggers that activate our stress response, glimmers represent their hopeful counterpart.
The concept of "glimmers" was coined by behavioral neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Porges as part of his groundbreaking Polyvagal Theory, introduced in 1995. This theory revolutionized our understanding of how the nervous system responds to safety and danger.
Glimmers are those micro-moments that signal safety to our nervous system. They're the gentle reminders that we're okay – the warm sunlight on your face, a genuine smile from a stranger, the comfort of a favorite song, or the familiar smell of home. These seemingly small experiences can activate our parasympathetic nervous system, bringing us back to a state of calm and connection.
We believe that healing happens not just by addressing trauma and triggers, but by intentionally cultivating and recognizing these glimmers in everyday life. The "spark" in NeuroSpark represents these moments of neural connection and safety that can grow into transformative healing experiences.
